Tractus led the comprehensive renovation of a 245-seat lecture theatre located in the Fletcher Argue Building at the University of Manitoba. This project involved upgrading the space to enhance both its functionality and aesthetics. Key features of the renovation included the installation of acoustical ceiling and wall panels to improve sound quality, the integration of a cutting-edge audiovisual system, the construction of new concrete stairs, and significant updates to the building’s envelope, such as the installation of curtain wall glazing, upgraded entrance doors, and the addition of a modern HVAC system with a new air handling unit and heat pumps.
Challenge
Renovating a multi-tiered facility within a busy university environment presented a unique set of challenges. The project required the careful handling of asbestos remediation, coordination with an interconnected HVAC system serving multiple parts of the building, and ensuring safety protocols during the unprecedented conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Solution
Collaboration was key to the success of this project. By maintaining close coordination with all our partners, we were able to proactively manage timelines, anticipate and mitigate the risks associated with hazardous materials, and conduct thorough investigations into existing building systems. We also adapted to the evolving health and safety requirements brought on by the pandemic, ensuring both worker and student safety throughout the renovation process.
